WHAT IS THE HUMAN PAPILLOMA VIRUS AND ITS TREATMENT?

The human papillomavirus (HPV) is a sexually transmitted disease (STD); It is of great importance in pre-neoplastic lesions and cervical cancer. Worldwide, it is estimated that approximately 500,000 new cases of this cancer are diagnosed each year, of which 83% occur in developing countries.

Most infections do not cause symptoms.

Worldwide, HPV 16 and 18  are responsible for 70% of all cervical cancers; types 6 and 11 are associated with the development of benign lesions such as warts and condylomata acuminata.

Among the studies for the diagnosis we find the Papanicolaou, PCR, Colposcopy, and Biopsy of the cervix.

There is no cure for HPV itself, but there are medical treatments that depend on the severity and extent of the lesion caused by HPV, such as cryotherapy, electrosurgery, cervical cone, laser, and even hysterectomy.

Currently there are registered recombinant prophylactic vaccines.
